It didn’t have the feature set that an editor needs nowadays and, particularly with larger projects, it became sluggish and annoying. Sadly, the answer was a pretty resounding “no”. The question was, could you start an edit in Resolve? Would it be possible to use Resolve as the only NLE for your prime-time TV show, or your latest Bollywood blockbuster? So the previous release of Resolve, version 11, had a reasonable editor – certainly enough to do minor changes without having to go back to the off-line – and the editor was available in the free version. At some point, you must get to a tipping point, and you start to develop the NLE features for their own sake. So some of the abilities of an NLE kinda had to be there, to make a useful grading system.Īnd as the capabilities of the ‘source’ NLEs expanded it was useful if Resolve kept up with those new capabilities. Grading software, like Resolve, always had to ‘understand’ the edit imported from Avid, or FCP or whatever, and it’s useful to have the user interface to allow the edit to be tweaked once it gets in to on-line – as a grader friend of mine once said, “If you ever find a Director who actually locks picture, please give her my name and number.” My theory is that, a few years ago, Blackmagic Design realised that Resolve was turning into a Non-Linear Video Editor – almost by accident. There are lots of articles on the web and in conventional media detailing some of the illogical actions of Yelp. But, whose software? Is it any good? What is the theory behind it? What is the root cause of seemingly illogical actions? It seems whenever the media does a story on complaints about Yelp, the repeat the company’s line on using software to screen reviews. Obscuring Aether only sees play in 195 decks right now, which to me seems low.īefore there was Ixidron, there was another card, from back in Legion, that had power and toughness that scaled with the number of face-downs in play. It even has the added bonus of being able to flip face-down and turn into a 2/2 should removal come its way. Speaking of redundancy, Obscuring Aether is an excellent second Dream Chisel, reducing the costs of face-down creatures even further. This artifact will help add some redundancy to Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer 's cost-reduction effect, potentially allowing us to squeeze in multiple face-down plays in a turn it's always an auto-include for me in this theme. While the original Morph-er Ixidor, Reality Sculptor comes in at 451 decks on the site, his tool of choice, the Dream Chisel, is an eligible inclusion at only 228 decks. Personally, I know I'm a big fan from all the way back in Onslaught block. Morph has been one of those fan-favorite abilities to come back over and over again. As there are several hyper-underplayed cards in the Morph theme, I'm shaping Faceless Menace into a deck even more focused towards flipping creatures face-up. These preconstructed decks are designed to be capable of going many different directions, especially when looking at the new cards introduced in the set. Step one in this process is selecting the theme, and through that, the commander. The hope is to increase synergy and potentially free up generally good cards for use in other decks. The goal here will be updating the deck by adding in only cards that meet the hyper-underplayed requirement above. Specifically, it's the newly-released Faceless Menace preconstructed Commander deck. Normally, I would talk about some weird deck built from scratch using hyper-underplayed cards, but today, I'll be starting with an already-assembled deck. For today's installment, we're going to try something a little different in celebration of the new Commander 2019 decks. Good day everyone! You've happened upon yet another Forgotten Harvest, where we feature those cards that see play in 300 or less decks on EDHREC. ( Cabal Executioner | Art by Rebecca Guay) So You Went and Got Faceless Menace. There are a lot of younger people getting into it. They could make up to 300 units and were sold out of them in three weeks. The Rob Zombie pinball game is the first licensed game they made. Their first game, “America’s Most Haunted” sold out of 150 units in two years. The crew of only ten employees, including Emery’s family, has been making about two pinball machines a day. The current pinball game, “Rob Zombie Spookshow International”, is a fairly complicated game to build. Each pinball machine is different in the manufacturing process. But to date, they have sold upwards of 150 Domino’s Pinball games. Emery saw someone make three pizzas in 36 seconds. Celebrities from Pen and Teller to Magic Johnson were there along with the world’s fastest pizza making competition. But Domino’s was all over it and stuck with it.” The big reveal was out in Las Vegas at the Domino’s World Wide Rally for 9,000 people. “We have been approached by a few corporate gigs to do that kind of thing but they rarely go through because pinball is incredibly complicated and expensive. They went to Pinball Life’s open house last October, right around the pinball expo when Adam Gacek, Vice President and General Counsel at Domino’s, approached them about potentially building a game for them to help their Domino’s Partner Foundation, the charity that Domino’s runs. So the Benton State Bank stepped in and Steve Malone bought the game to keep it here in town so that the very first game we ever built would stay here.” They just débuted their pinball machine for Domino’s Pizza. “The village wanted to keep it in the community as did we. The first game ever built is still in town, down at Lawrence Pub and Eatery. “I spent the first year of Spooky Pinball engineering then learning how to set up a manufacturing process.” The very first game they sold was to Joe Newhart from PinballSTAR Amusements in Pennsylvania. Emery’s daughter Morgan, who is only 16, makes all the wiring harnesses. Common pinball parts come from Pinball Life in Chicago but all the unique pieces, all the cabinets, everything else is engineered in house. The only things not made in Benton are the electronics, which are designed and engineered by Parker Dillmann from MacroFab in Houston and Ben Heckendorn who hosts his own internet TV show in Madison called “The Ben Heck Show” and was the one who helped them design and set up their first game “America’s Most Haunted”. We are looking to probably add on next summer.” It probably doesn’t take long to run out of room when everything that goes into the pinball machine is made in house, in the building. The company started out in the Benton Business Incubator but in March 2016 they moved to their new building just down the road at 184 Ridge Ave. I love all things creepy and weird.” The podcast became really popular and the name flowed over to the company. “To give the podcast sort of a theme, I’m a spooky, horror movie loving guy. So after three years of that I quit and started Spooky Pinball.” The name Spooky Pinball came from the podcast that Emery and his family, wife, Kayte, and children Corwin “Bug” and Morgan “Squirrel”, created. “But at the same time we wanted to do our own thing and make our own games. Emery worked with his employer and they helped another pinball company get their start. After showing off their game, phone calls started coming in wanting more games like that one. The printing technique came from SSi Decals in Galena where Emery had worked for over 20 years. That lead to some phone calls,” Emery explained. We took it to a gaming show in Milwaukee for fun and the printing technique garnered some industry attention. “My son and I re-themed an old game into a Godzilla game when he was really little. Spooky Pinball is one of only three pinball manufacturers in the United States. BENTON - The pinball industry is alive and well according to Charlie Emery of Spooky Pinball out of Benton. Fox, but should instead be along the lines of Tom Cruise, in terms of appearance. Katzenberg saw the early versions of Aladdin to be along the lines of Michael J. Though directors Ron Clements and John Musker enjoyed the idea, executive producer, Jeffrey Katzenberg did not, feeling the romantic relationship between a meek Aladdin and the beautiful Princess Jasmine would come off as unrealistic, as Jasmine wouldn't find herself physically attracted to that portrayal of Aladdin. In addition, he claimed that typical Disney films have a sort of class system with their characters, such as the cartoonish sidekicks, the dramatic villains, the beautiful heroines, and the boring "Prince Charming"-type heroes that "nobody ever wanted to animate". The idea was brought upon by animator Glen Keane, who believed Aladdin, the lead of an underdog story should have a more meager, vulnerable appearance to match his role in the film's narrative. In the earliest stages of the story, Aladdin was portrayed as a much younger character-a boy, as opposed to a young man. Aladdin and Abu would form a brotherly relationship throughout this endeavor, and would eventually leave the circus, but remain together as both partners and best friends. When he was sixteen, Aladdin fell in with a group of circus performers and con artists: Aziz, Fatima, Minos, and their pet monkey, Abu. Aladdin was present when Amal disappeared, unaware that he was taken and became an El Khatib, serving one of his future adversaries, Mirage. At the age of ten, Aladdin was best friends with a fellow street rat and thief, Amal, but unlike Aladdin, he stole money and valuables for his own selfish greed, which Aladdin was strongly against. While in his mid-teen years, he stole a vest, a pair of pants, and a fez from a clothesline, which would form his signature outfit. Initially, the boy managed to outmaneuver the guards, but was eventually apprehended and sentenced to detention within the palace dungeon however, he managed to escape by picking the locks to his chains. When Aladdin was seven, he had his first encounter with Razoul, the new captain of the Sultan's guard, after stealing an apple from a fruit stand. Lacking other means, he steals only to survive, but his good heart often moves him to donate his stolen goods to those who are as poor, if not poorer than him, making him a Robin Hood-like figure. With no form of income, he was forced to learn to survive on the streets of Agrabah. Due to being orphaned so early, Aladdin never received a formal education, nor had a positive role model to guide him through life. By the time Cassim returned, he couldn't find his family, believing them to be dead, resulting in him leaving Agrabah out of despair, where he'd eventually become a leader of the infamous Forty Thieves, though this would remain unknown to Aladdin for an extended number of years. A few years later, Aladdin's mother passed away, leaving him an orphan and forcing him to fend for himself. Due to this, Aladdin never met or knew his father, believing he was dead and was given a dagger as his only memento. Due to their struggling background, Cassim left Agrabah shortly after Aladdin was born in hopes of finding a better way to provide for his family. 5.2 Disney's Aladdin in Nasira's RevengeĪladdin was born to Cassim and Zena, citizens of the kingdom of Agrabah. It is directed and choreographed by Casey Nicholaw. The musical features music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Howard Ashman, Tim Rice and Chad Beguelin, with a book by Beguelin. This production features five songs from the Academy Award-winning movie soundtrack and more written especially for the stage. She joins a cast that features Michael Maliakel in the title role, Michael James Scott as Genie, Dennis Stowe as Jafar, Milo Alosi as Kassim, Zach Bencal as Babkak and Brad Weinstock as Omar, JC Montgomery as Sultan and Don Darryl Rivera as Iago.Īladdin was adapted from the animated Disney film and centuries-old folktales, including “One Thousand and One Nights.” Aladdin’s journey sweeps audiences into a world of adventure, classic comedy and romance. Balsara replaces current star Shoba Narayan, who will play her final performance on January 15.īalsara previously played the role of Jasmine for several weeks last fall while Narayan starred in the world premiere of Come Fall in Love – The DDLJ Musical. This marks Balsara's Broadway debut. Sonya Balsara will take over as Jasmine in Aladdinon Broadway beginning January 19 at the New Amsterdam Theatre. As the clock runs, the chain is unwound from the fusee from top to bottom and wound on the barrel. So the strong pull of the wound up mainspring is applied to the small end of the fusee, and the torque on the fusee is reduced by the small lever arm of the fusee radius. 1), all the chain is wrapped around the fusee from bottom to top, and the end going to the barrel comes off the narrow top end of the fusee. In a fusee clock, the barrel turns the fusee by pulling on the chain, and the fusee turns the clock's gears. The force of the spring turns the barrel. The mainspring is coiled around a stationary axle ( arbor), inside a cylindrical box, the barrel. (A) mainspring arbor, (B) barrel, (C) chain, (D) attachment of chain to fusee, (E) attachment of chain to barrel, (F) fusee, (G) winding arbor, (W) output gear. Fusees designed for use with cords can be distinguished by their grooves, which have a circular cross section, where ones designed for chains have rectangular-shaped grooves.Īround 1726 John Harrison added the maintaining power spring to the fusee to keep marine chronometers running during winding, and this was generally adopted.įusee and mainspring barrel, showing operation. Gruet of Geneva is widely credited with introducing them in 1664, although the first reference to a fusee chain is around 1540. Around 1650 chains began to be used, which lasted longer. Fusees became the standard method of getting constant force from a mainspring, used in most spring-wound clocks, and watches when they appeared in the 17th century.Īt first the fusee cord was made of gut, or sometimes wire. The first fusees were long and slender, but later ones have a more squat compact shape. Clockmakers apparently empirically discovered the correct shape for the fusee, which is not a simple cone but a hyperboloid. As the movement ran, the tapering shape of the fusee pulley continuously changed the mechanical advantage of the pull from the mainspring, compensating for the diminishing spring force. The stackfreed, a crude cam compensator, added a lot of friction and was abandoned after less than a century. Two solutions to this problem appeared with the first spring driven clocks the stackfreed and the fusee. This problem is called lack of isochronism. So early spring-driven clocks slowed down over their running period as the mainspring unwound, causing inaccurate timekeeping. The primitive verge and foliot timekeeping mechanism, used in all early clocks, was sensitive to changes in drive force. Unlike a weight on a cord, which exerts a constant force to turn the clock's wheels, the force a spring exerts diminishes as the spring unwinds. These early spring-driven clocks were much less accurate than weight-driven clocks. Springs were first employed to power clocks in the 15th century, to make them smaller and portable. Watch from 1500s with stackfreed (near top). The earliest existing clock with a fusee, also the earliest spring-powered clock, is the Burgunderuhr (Burgundy clock), a chamber clock whose iconography suggests that it was made for Phillipe the Good, Duke of Burgundy about 1430, now in the Germanisches Nationalmuseum The word fusee comes from the French fusée and late Latin fusata, 'spindle full of thread'. Drawings from the 15th century by Filippo Brunelleschi and Leonardo da Vinci show fusees. The idea probably did not originate with clockmakers, since the earliest known example is in a crossbow windlass shown in a 1405 military manuscript. The earliest definitely dated fusee clock was made by Zech in 1525, but the fusee actually appeared earlier, with the first spring driven clocks in the 15th century. Many sources erroneously credit clockmaker Jacob Zech of Prague with inventing it around 1525. Drawing of a machine incorporating a fusee, by Leonardo da Vinci around 1490. |
